Pain causes the stress response (“Fight or Flight”; sympathetic nervous system) to increase heart rate, blood pressure, respiration rate, inflammation, cortisol, and adrenaline. BOWEN THERAPY arrests the stress response by stimulating the release of acetylcholine, via gentle myofascial manipulation. We apply subtle pressure to muscles in a direction perpendicular to muscle fibres. This pressure stimuli triggers the brain to send activation energy which ignites involuntary fast-twitch muscle fibres. When we feel the muscle begin to twitch, we roll gently over the muscle belly to release the pressure stimulus, while the muscle fibres continue their fast-twitch action for a few micro-seconds longer. In the absence of pressure stimuli, a fast-twitching muscle will trigger nerve cells to release acetylcholine neurotransmitters, which activate the parasympathetic nervous system (“Rest & Digest”; relaxation response). When this technique is applied slowly, to all major muscle groups of the body, it induces a profound relaxation response throughout ALL tissues of the body. BOWEN THERAPY serves to: stabilize your body immediately following severe acute injury; initiate reversal of chronic disease; relax an achy body; repair sprains and strains; repair damaged tissues; restore energy; promote circulation; replenish oxygen and nutrient stores; activate parasympathetic nervous system; enhance immune response; activate digestion; induce restful sleep.
